In Search of Meaning (Felisa Tan)
An inspiring meeting with photographer and visual artist Felisa Tan, where the exchange of a book, a drawing and ideas became a lasting reminder that meaningful encounters often continue long after they end. Art sometimes begins with a conversation. A shared search for meaning led to an exchange of works, ideas and inspiration that continues beyond that day.
10 January 2024 – Jakarta, Indonesia
Today I had the pleasure of meeting artist-photographer Felisa Tan for lunch before we visited the Museum MACAN in Jakarta together. Our conversation naturally moved between photography, painting, books and the creative process. It was an inspiring exchange of ideas between two artists who, each in their own medium, are exploring ways of observing and understanding the world. Felisa had recently published her first book, In Search for Meaning, a remarkable collection of photographs created over more than fifteen years. I purchased a signed copy for my collection, while she selected one of my original drawings to take home as a gift. It was a simple and genuine exchange that felt meaningful to both of us.
One unexpected souvenir from the day was the linen book bag that accompanied the publication. Rather than leaving it untouched, I later transformed it into a conceptual artwork, allowing the object itself to continue its journey through art.
Felisa’s work demonstrates an attentive eye for the quiet beauty found in everyday life. Her photographs invite the viewer to slow down, observe carefully and rediscover the extraordinary within the ordinary.
