Biography
Dow Kok is a European contemporary artist whose practice unfolds between Europe and Asia. Working in the space between abstraction and figuration, he builds paintings intuitively through layering, concealment, excavation and recovery, allowing presence to emerge rather than imposing it from the outset.
Although rooted in abstraction, traces of figures, landscapes and architectural forms often surface unexpectedly. This ongoing dialogue between the abstract and the recognisable forms lies at the heart of his practice, where memory, identity, erosion, balance and transformation remain recurring themes. This evolving process has become the foundation of what Dow Kok describes as Excavated Figuration, an approach to constructing, concealing and excavating layers of paint until presence gradually reveals itself.

Dow Kok’s work was not formed within the walls of an academy, but through a lifetime spent living alongside art. Decades as a collector, traveller, observer and professional outside the art world became an education of a different kind. The paintings are the destination of that journey, not its beginning.
Architecture, museums, travel, conversations and lived experience all form part of the landscape from which the work emerges. Rather than illustrating specific stories, the paintings absorb fragments of memory and experience, transforming them into images that exist between remembering and forgetting.
Since 2021, Dow Kok has maintained his studio in a restored eighteenth-century townhouse in the historic centre of Oliva, Spain. The building serves as home, studio and private viewing space, where works develop in dialogue across different series and periods.
During the European winter months, Kok spends extended periods working in Thailand. Living and creating within different cultural landscapes has become an integral part of his artistic process, allowing each body of work to absorb new experiences while remaining rooted in a coherent visual language. The movement between Europe and Asia continues to shape the evolution of his practice.
Working across canvas, wood and handcrafted paper, Dow Kok creates only original works. No prints, editions or reproductions are made. Every work exists as a singular object, carrying the traces of its own making.
Practice
Dow Kok does not pursue a single style, but an evolving artistic language. Working across canvas, wood and handcrafted paper, his practice embraces multiple bodies of work, ranging from abstraction and blurred imagery to figurative painting. Each series develops its own visual language while remaining part of a larger, interconnected body of work.
Rather than following a linear progression, ideas, forms and themes continuously reappear, evolve and transform across different series. Every painting exists as an individual work, while simultaneously contributing to an ongoing dialogue that continues to shape the broader oeuvre.
Artist statement
Painting begins long before the first mark is made.
I do not approach the canvas with a fixed image or predetermined outcome. Every painting is a process of searching, where intuition, observation and uncertainty guide the work until something begins to reveal itself. What emerges is rarely what I expected at the outset. More often, the finished painting feels less created than discovered, as if it had always existed beneath the surface.
This way of working has become the foundation of what I describe as Excavated Figuration: not a style, but a way of thinking. The painting evolves through continual change, hesitation and discovery, allowing presence to emerge on its own rather than being imposed. My intention is never to illustrate an idea, but to create the conditions in which something unexpected can emerge.
I create only original works. No prints, editions or reproductions exist. Every artwork is unique.
