An exchange in Wood and Paper
Some encounters begin with a conversation and continue through the exchange of artworks. Meeting Indonesian sculptor Rudi Hendrianto in his Yogyakarta studio became one of those memorable moments, where paper and wood formed a quiet dialogue between two artists.
20 January 2024 – Yogyakarta, Indonesia Today I had the pleasure of visiting the studio of Indonesian sculptor Rudi Hendrianto (@rudi_hendrianto) in Yogyakarta. Surrounded by wood, tools and sculptures in various stages of creation, we spoke about art, materials and the creative process. There is something special about meeting another artist in the place where ideas take physical form. The studio itself felt honest, modest and entirely dedicated to making.
Rudi selected one of my original works on paper, k.14 – Phitsanulok (2024), for his personal collection. In return, he presented me with one of his beautifully crafted wooden springs a simple object transformed into sculpture through craftsmanship and imagination. Rather than exchanging objects, it felt as though we exchanged a small part of our artistic language. My work would remain in Indonesia, while his sculpture would continue travelling with me.
