This painting developed through a long process of excavation. Forms appeared, disappeared, were buried and returned in another form. Figures became architecture, architecture became bodies, and fragments that initially seemed insignificant gradually revealed their importance. The pale grid suggests order and measurement, but the imagery refuses to remain within it. Different realities occupy the same surface: figures, structures, animals, machinery, memory and imagined landscapes overlap without one becoming the definitive subject. Late in the process I introduced a series of small red circles. They function almost as coordinates, not explaining what should be seen, but marking places where something seems to have revealed itself. They invite the viewer to look again. For a long time I intended to cut the finished painting into two panels. Eventually I realised that the divisions already existed within the work and that physically separating it would remove something essential. It needed to remain one. The painting contains traces of every stage that came before it. Some remain visible, others survive only beneath the surface. Only afterwards do we recognise what has been present all along. In hindsight, it was already there.
