Dow Kok’s practice is grounded in an intuitive process in which the act of painting becomes a form of excavation. Rather than constructing images, he reveals them allowing latent structures, figures, and tensions to emerge from layered surfaces. In this work, the canvas is divided by a compressed horizontal band, suggesting a threshold between two states: an unstable, atmospheric upper field and a denser, sedimented lower register. Within the upper zone, a solitary, ambiguous figure traverses a fragile terrain. Neither fully animal nor human, it appears as a residual presence an echo of life persisting under uncertain conditions. Surrounding it, luminous yet toxic greens spread across the surface, evoking a form of growth that is at once vital and contaminated. The environment resists stability; it drips, dissolves, and reconfigures, as if caught in a state of perpetual transition. Below, the painting shifts in weight and tempo. Forms condense into darker, inward-moving structures, including a circular motif that reads simultaneously as aperture, wound, and containment. This lower register does not mirror the space above; it accumulates it. What is visible on the surface finds its consequence here, embedded within a slower, more irreversible process. The title, "From the sky above there is always the mud below", does not describe but frames the work’s underlying condition: the inseparability of elevation and aftermath, of movement and residue. Dow Kok’s painting resists narrative closure, instead offering a field in which viewers encounter traces of presence, erosion, and persistence. In doing so, it opens a space for reflection on the fragile continuity between what is lived, what is lost, and what remains.
