A composition defined by division and resistance. A dominant white cross cuts through the surface, separating the painting into four distinct zones. This imposed structure does not resolve the image into order; rather, it establishes a framework within which conflicting forces unfold. Each quadrant operates with its own internal logic. Gestural marks, dense passages, and fragmented forms emerge and recede, suggesting shifting states rather than fixed imagery. Hints of figuration appear faces, bodies, or traces of presence but remain unstable, dissolving back into the surrounding material. The surface carries the evidence of its making, with layers built, interrupted, and partially erased. Color functions as both connection and disruption. Deep blacks absorb and anchor the composition, while reds punctuate the field with moments of intensity, recurring across the divided space without unifying it. The white cross remains constant, yet it is neither neutral nor passive; it interrupts, isolates, and asserts a structural order that the surrounding paint continuously challenges. The title, Counterpoint, frames the work as a condition of simultaneous opposition.
